Hyundai has scored a major corporate coup, signing Bugatti designer Alexander ‘Sasha' Selipanov to its Genesis luxury division.
Selipanov has joined the Korean brand, taking up his post as chief designer at the company's Global Genesis Advanced Studio, located in Europe.
As a design-focused brand, Genesis has been recruiting some of the world's top automotive designers as well as young, creative talent from all over the world, choosing candidates not only for their creativity but also for their expertise in innovative design processes which it expects to be a focal point for the brand.
In a relatively short but stellar career, Selipanov has been mainly responsible for the exterior design of sports cars at luxury marques, including Bugatti.
Hyundai's belief is that his diverse experiences, accumulated expertise and tremendous passion for cars will make him another valued asset for the global Genesis design team.
Speaking about the Genesis appointment, Selipanov said he was "sincerely excited" about the opportunity and believes it will open up a new chapter in his career.
"As I have been working with well-established brands so far, Genesis is a new and refreshing challenge to me," he said. "I am honoured to join this exciting journey as it is a very rare chance to launch a luxury automotive brand and be part of its history.
"With growing expectations and curiosity around Genesis, I cannot wait to contribute my expertise and passion to the brand," he added.
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1983, the Russian national earned his Bachelor's degree in Transportation Design at California's Art Centre College of Design in 2005.
After graduating he joined Volkswagen's Design Centre in Potsdam, Germany, working on exterior design projects for all brands of the Volkswagen Group.
Following his stint with the main Volkswagen Group, he moved to Sant'Agata, Italy, in 2010, taking up a tenure with VW-owned Italian sports car maker Lamborghini as a member of the exterior design team for the Huracan project.
In 2014 he was appointed Head of Exterior Design at Bugatti Automobiles (also owned by Volkswagen), spending the past two-and-a-half years working on the exterior design of Bugatti's Vision Gran Turismo show car and the Bugatti Chiron.
Vision Gran Turismo was unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, and Chiron was given its global debut at this year's Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland.
Alexander Selipanov took up his new role at Genesis in January 2017, reporting directly to Head of Genesis Design, Luc Donckerwolke.
