If you’d said to someone in the 1990’s that taking photos of your food was normal and Donald Trump would be president, they’d think you were mad.
And if you’d gone on to say that Hyundai would be making cars that rivalled the likes of Toyota, Mazda and Volkswagen for quality, style, driverability and performance, they'd probably try to lock you up. However, it’s now 2017 and Hyundai have delivered the i30 SR Premium.
The latest in a range of cars from Hyundai that are proving that practice definitely makes perfect. The third generation of i30 is a standout for Hyundai, appealing in it’s own right and not just from a 'value for money' stand point. With it’s extra shot of performance, the SR Premium turns the volume up, from appealing to downright desirable.
The i30 SR Premium is packed with features including:
- 18-inch alloys,
- LED daytime running lights and LED rear tail lights,
- Panoramic Glass Roof,
- Rear view camera and park assist,
- 3 drive modes,
- Push Button start,
- 8.0-inch touch screen with Apple Carplay and android auto, Sat Nav and SUNA updates,
- Leather seats that are both heated and cooled and Dual zone climate control,
- 5 star Ancap safety rating,
- 7 Airbags,
- Autonomous Emergency Braking,
- Blind-spot monitoring, lane assist and radar-guided adaptive cruise control to look after your safety.
The cabin is a lovely place to be with comfortable and supportive seats, ensuring the driving position is spot on. All the touch points are neat and the feel of quality is noticeable. The leather steering wheel, red belts and alloy pedals add some extra flare and the virtually floating display screen is extremely easy to use. The screen resolution is superb and the tech is as user friendly, as it is intelligent. Boot space is an almost class-leading holding 395 litres and the panoramic glass roof makes the rear seats feel spacious and roomy. Cup holders and storage areas are plentiful.
The i30 SR Premium comes with a 5 year unlimited kms warranty, roadside assist, 10 years of Sat Nav updates and a lifetime service plan. All that for $33,950. Not only does it out-power it’s Japanese and European rivals, it manages to undercut them as well, but what’s it like to drive?
Powered by retuned and improved 1.6lt turbo engine previously found in the funky Veloster SR and under-rated Elantra SR Turbo, this little powerhouse of an engine puts out a very respectable 150kW and 265Nm and is mated to a very smooth 7 speed dual clutch DCT auto and it doesn't suffer the typical jerkiness that many dual clutches are known for from when pottering around town and the actual gear changes are almost instant when flicking through the paddles.
The suspension has been tuned for Australian conditions and it shows. Hyundai have found that perfect balance between keeping the ride soft yet maintaining total body control even when you’re being a bit more enthusiastic with that right foot. The steering is accurate from centre and has three settings, including a sports mode that increases resistance and feel.
Performance wise it’s good. It might be more of a warm hatch than a hot one but this 1.6 litre turbo has more than enough punch for around town or for some more enthusiastic driving once you're out of suburbia. 0-100km/h is dealt with in 7.5sec so the i30 SR Premium certainly isn’t hanging around and it’s mid-range roll on urge will look after overtaking easily.
If you don’t want to stretch to the the more full on hot hatches like the Golf GTi or Focus ST but you still want a practical, fun hatchback, get into Klosters and check out the new Hyundai i30 SR Premium starting from $33,950.
